Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

Counselors Corner

As the holidays approach, students and teachers are starting to relax a little and ‘wind down'. Certainly this is a good thing as the stress of school and classes is coming to an end. What's important to remember during the holidays, however, is that with the free time comes the added burden of ensuring that everyone is safe, as well as happy. Family celebrations and parties often mean the use of alcohol increases, sometimes to the level of abuse; and this can be concerning. We know that domestic violence and family tension can sometimes be linked to alcohol and drug use; so being aware is important for everyone.

If you or a loved one is affected by alcohol abuse and needing help, calling on family and friends may be a good start. Local agencies including your local Police; and Family & Community Services may also assist if difficulties arise. And support is available if you require counselling or advice. Young people can contact Headspace on 1800 650 890 in an emergency, or Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800. Of course, LifeLine is also available to provide counselling support year round: phone 13 11 14

Selective High School - Information

Selective high schools cater for the specific needs of high achieving gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Selective schools help gifted and talent students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. Parents apply when the student is in Year 5. The students sit the test in March of Year 6.

To be considered for placement students must sit the Selective High School Placement Test. For information about applying and the placement process go to https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.

Some selective high schools have vacancies in Years 8 to 12. Applications open in late June for placement the following year.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is coming to LMPS!!!

What is Positive Behaviour for Learning?

Lake Munmorah P.S staff and students are excited to be introducing a new positive behaviour framework for our school to support the wellbeing of every student.

This framework is an evidence based, positive, social, student focussed approach to behaviour that involves the whole school community. It includes creating, teaching and rewarding expected and pro-social behaviours and involves everyone, everywhere, every time.

PBL boosts student engagement in learning by increasing attendance and retention, and improving student behaviour in all settings across the school.

In the early stages PBL expectations are developed for all playground settings in the school. Classroom teachers will still be incorporating ‘You Can Do It' strategies and awards on a classroom level. Over time, we will see a merging of these two approaches ensuring we meld the two to get the best framework to support the students and their learning.

The PBL framework will be underpinned by three core values, which we will uphold at all times. They will guide our expectations of student behaviours. Consultations with our staff and classroom connectors so far have led us to identify three values for students to follow:

• RESPECT

• RESPONSIBLE

· PERSONAL BEST

These values are still in draft and will be raised for further discussion at the P&C meeting next Tuesday evening. If you wish to comment or have input please come along to the meeting or directly contact the school and ask to speak to a member of the PBL team.

How will PBL work at LMPS?

Regular staff meetings throughout the year are used to identify and refine our expected behaviours in all areas of the school. These are then turned into explicit lessons through a collaborative process between all staff, and are refined in the PBL teams meetings. Each week students are involved in lessons that specifically teach and practice our expectations that are continually reinforced through daily assemblies, the newsletter, the website, the APP and via the electronic school sign. Lessons will be supported with visuals throughout the school to remind children of our expectations.

PBL is still in the beginning developmental stages at LMPS and will be introduced gradually into the school throughout this year. Once we are ready a formal launch of PBL will be held in early 2018.

If you have any questions about PBL, please contact the front office and Mr Holmes or someone from the PBL team will contact you.

We look forward to introducing PBL!

The PBL Team

Clean Water Project for OXFAM

Class 2J have made a difference to the lives of children on the other side of the world. Together they raised over $200 to support clean water projects by OXFAM. Tuesday 31 May was $1day challenge and the students in 2J participated in a water carrying relay. Each child carried two buckets of water for 300 metres, a combined total of over 6 kilometres. Why 6 kilometres? That is the distance that many children have to walk each day to collect clean water for their family. The year 2 students have been talking about water during their science lessons and have been discussing how fortunate they are that here in Lake Munmorah, they have access to clean fresh water in their homes and at school. The money they have raised will allow OXFAM to build water pumps in villages in Africa, allowing children there to have access to clean fresh water too. Well done students of 2J!

Out of School Hours Program - Important Information

Re: Important Information for ALL Families

School Access Changes

The new Out of School Hours Program being conducted by Camp Australia commences next Monday. This is a great addition to the range of programs our school offers and I am sure that you all agree this will be a tremendous service to the families of our school community.

The service will provide a care facility in the morning (6:45am – 8:45am) and afternoons (3:00pm- 6:00pm) each day and a vacation care program during school holiday periods. It is highly affordable with fees being as low as $4.36 a session for eligible families.

The program has been implemented for a number of reasons, but primarily it was in response to the care issues families were facing at the beginning of the school day. Recognising that there were no care facilities available to students who arrive early in the morning, the school, in conjunction with the P&C and the Department of Education, arranged for a service to be delivered from the school.

Up until now the school has been lenient in allowing students onto the school site prior to supervision commencing at 8:30, but due to the concerns about the safety of students and the legal ramifications of a student being injured or harmed on site this will no longer be allowed.

It is also the case that we hold responsibility to ensure the safety of the workers and students in the OoSH program. This is a Workplace Health and Safety matter and was a requirement when agreeing to conduct an OoSH program on the school site.

As a result, decisions have been made in consultation and agreement with the school's P&C, which will see changed gating arrangements implemented soon after the service commences next week.

From Week 6 the gates will not be opened until 8:15am and they will be closed at 3:30pm. Any student entering or exiting the school outside these times will only be those that are registered to attend the OoSH program, and this will be by using the new walk through gate at the back of the hall near the pedestrian crossing. This gate is being installed over the next week. No other gates will be open.

To avoid your child being placed in an unsafe situation outside the school, I ask that you either register your child/ren to attend the OoSH program, or to make other care arrangements suitable to your family. Information about the Camp Australia service can be found via a link on our school website:

Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

Yours sincerely Yours sincerely

School Canteen

The P&C met on Tuesday night and worked through some important business items, one of which was to consider the opportunity to take on the operation of the school canteen. After a lot of discussion a motion was put and passed unanimously that they would assume responsibility for the canteen from the beginning of Week 6 this term. A canteen committee has been established, being led by Mr Richard Smider and they have already commenced preparations to run the canteen service. There will be a paid canteen manager who will run the canteen and the advertisement for this should be in this newsletter next week. However, a strong canteen relies heavily on volunteer support and a call for volunteers will be made soon. I would like to think that our community will fall in behind the P&C and generously offer time to volunteer help and work in the canteen. It is important to note that there was strong acknowledgement of the work done by Ms Sharon Jaques, the current canteen manager, and recognition of her commitment in offering the children a quality service each day. Sharon has a great love for what she does and I know the children really enjoy having contact with her each day and I know she will be missed.

To further assist our work in ensuring that we are offering the best possible service to our school community we are again asking that you complete a quick and easy survey about our school. It will only take you 5-7 minutes but the information you provide will be invaluable in assisting our planning and having some base line data to measure our effectiveness over the coming twelve months. The survey can be found at the following link:

Next year it is our intention to commence a band program at the school. I have been in contact with the Central Coast Conservatorium and they are very keen to support the school in running a band program. This exciting initiative will provide your child the opportunity to learn one of the following band instruments – Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba or Drums. It also provides the opportunity for the students to be involved in mass band festivals with other schools around the Central Coast. In the next couple of weeks a parent information meeting will be held for interested families and an expression of interest will be issued to allow you to commence the sign up process for the band. So if you want to give your child the gift of music for a lifetime please come along and hear about this tremendous opportunity for your children. Date for this will be advertised shortly.

As you would have read in the school newsletter we have now started a monthly Brian Hilton Stars Award. This monthly award will go to a student who exemplifies the core values of Program Achieve at all times in their learning and in their dealings with students and teachers. I can see this to become a very prestigious award and with the student receiving a trophy, a medallion, a certificate and gift voucher I believe it will become something the children will aspire to receive.

This morning the inaugural winner of the Brian Hilton Stars Award was Shaylee V in 5/6B.

For the first two weeks of term I was lucky enough to be on 3/4R whilst Mr Robinson was Relieving Principal. In this time, the class explored different cultures with a focus on Thailand.

The students and I thought it would be a beneficial learning experience if we could connect with a school in Thailand to learn about their culture from a primary source. The class created an email to send to schools in Thailand.

Udon Thani International School replied to us and we were able to arrange a Skype call with a 3 / 4 class. The students created questions to ask the class.

During this process there were many learning outcomes for the students. Students have now a greater understanding of culture diversity and awareness of how different schools operate around the world. Students were also exposed to the latest technologies such as Google Apps For Education, Edmodo and Skype during this process.

The competition asked competitors to bring in an ugly fruit or vegetable. The student had to show their fruit/veg and then eat it in front of the audience. The student panel judged their effort and the winner won a choice of seeds to plant in the school spring garden.

It was messy and a lot of fun!

Stage 2 Bush Tucker Experience

A big, big thank you to the wonderful people from Bara Barang for providing such a rich and tasty experience for all Stage 2 children today.

This experience was a wonderful way for children to be exposed to authentic knowledge and interaction from local Aboriginal people, their stories, way of life, music and food culture. This quality learning experience provides an authentic and significant link to the children's History and Aboriginal Education Units and has provided a connectedness to learned information, inturn, enriching their learning.

Uncle Gavi Duncan lead the information sessions that were so enlightening and conducted with great joy and humour. Much was learnt by all about bush tucker foods. Did you know, that 'pea' sized honey sack of the Honey Ant was carefully eaten by the Aboriginal people? But they would not hurt the ant. They tried to put the ant back on the ground, or tree, alive so they could continue to enjoy honey in the future. In fact, leaves of certain plants, when rubbed in water, would put fish to sleep, making them float to the surface for easy catching once corralled in traps. Who knew that the humble grass tree could be used to make so many home comforts such as dilly bags and sleeping mats!

Priceless information like this has been passed on for thousands and thousands of years and has made its way to LMPS children. Every child listened intently and asked extremely interesting questions that made their teachers very proud. Nearly every child was brave enough to taste the Kangaroo meatballs: expertly prepared by Cheryl from Bara Barang - which were absolutely brilliant, while the Lemon Myrtle Chicken Skewer was the crowd favourite. There were no Wattle Seed Scones left at the end of the day and the bush jams and bush chutney were also enjoyed by nearly everyone.

To
ALL
the Stage 2 children that attended, your behaviour was was exceptional and it was good to see every single one of you embrace the day with enthusiasm and interest.

(Written by Ms Callaghan)

Boys Softball Central Coast Champions

Our boys' softball team played the final of the Central Coast Draw on Monday 31st August at East Gosford. The boys, once again, played extremely well and were victorious 29 – 8. This means they are now CENTRAL COAST CHAMPIONS and will play the Hunter champions in term 3.

Once again the boys played as a team and put together some wonderful combinations. Dalton and Kale worked well together running several players out, Brandon used some fancy footwork between bases to outwit the competitors and Dylan scored a magnificent home run.

Thanks again to Brandon for bringing along his dad to score and thanks to the parents who transported and watched the game.

LMPS Trivia Night

Some of you would be aware that a member of our teaching staff, Ms Joanna Daley is suffering a serious and life threatening illness. Late last year, Jo was diagnosed with a cancer condition which led to her having very invasive surgery last April. Unfortunately, despite the surgery, she is still dealing with its presence and continues to receive treatment to try and rid her of the cancer. Jo has been unable to be at work this term due to her ill health.

The school staff have been outstanding in their support of Jo and her family and have done some extraordinary things to help alleviate some of the pressures that they are contending with at this time. To help her manage the considerable costs involved in the treatments she is receiving the staff are now organising a benefit night for Jo and want our school community to join them in raising the much needed funds. The benefit will take the form of a ‘Trivia Night' to be held at the Doyalson RSL Club on Friday 11th September commencing at 6:30pm.

Please try to come along, you can come as an individual, or put together a table to play the trivia game, it will be a lot of fun. If you would like to join us you can purchase tickets from the school office. Ms Terri Fisher will be the contact person.

On Monday 24th August the girls' basketball team travelled to Terrigal (Scholastic Stadium) to play in the round 5 of the NSWPSSA knockout against Erina Heights PS.

Our team was slow to start against an assertive and well-coached team and we trailed by 13 points at half time. To the girl's credit, they demonstrated skill and determination and fought hard throughout the second half. After trailing by up to 21 points in the third quarter, the girls outscored Erina 12-2 in the final period. It was a gallant effort but unfortunately they couldn't close the gap, eventually going down 31-18.

I thank the girls for their patience, hard work and outstanding behaviour over the past few months. Thanks also to the parents who assisted in transportation.

Book Week is Coming!

Week 7 this term is Book Week & students are busy in the Library enjoying the

shortlisted books that have qualified for the Children's Book Council annual awards. They are on

display in the library if you would like to see them.

Every alternate year we have a book parade when children "dress up" as a favourite book character.

Thursday 27th August is Parade Day and you are invited to share the fun with us. Ideas for dress up

characters are also available in the library but remember simple is usually the best. Start

		planning NOW!

N.B. The book parade will take place 11.45-12.45 on Thursday the 27th of August. All children Kindergarten to Year 6 are involved. Call into the library or scan your own book shelves for ideas.

During Book Week we will be combining some activities to raise funds for the Nepal Earthquake

Appeal. Mr Allan will be visiting school to tell of his first hand experiences in Nepal & ways we

		can help.

Thank you to the many visitors who attended our Education Week Open Day & Book Fair last week. We had record sales & profit reached $1200 which will be used to purchase more books for the library. An even happier outcome though was to have three year 4 boys rush into the Library on Friday morning to report on the books they had purchased. They had all read 5 or 6 chapters of some exciting novels. Congratulations Adam Bennett, Connor Watson and Tyler Gatherer! I look forward to hearing how their stories end.

Feasibility of Out of School Hours (OoSH) Program

We are currently looking at the possibility of offering a before and after school care program here at our school. This is being considered in response to what appears to be a real need in our school as evidenced by the number of children arriving early each day and many who are going across the road to the St Brendan's program. The P&C have endorsed the further investigation of this possibility. To establish this program we need to measure the size of the demand for establishing the program and we will use this information as part of the tendering process if we get to that stage. I know you have been asked to do a number of surveys in recent times but it is extremely important that this survey is completed by as many people as possible. We need to get an accurate picture of what the demand for the program will be and the only way to do this is by surveying you. Could I please ask you to take the time to complete this very important survey?

It can be found at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/D6X38Q8
